Bill Freund, economist and children's book author, has published his first children's book with Rhyme Time Publishing. This is an exciting time for Bill and his family as his memoir about leaving Germany and coming to the United States is published. Rhyme Time Publishing is proud to have published this remarkable book.

Freund, retired economist, professor and vice president of the New York Stock Exchange, is a man of many hats. His book, The Cookie that Saved My Family, describes the events leading to his family's move to the U.S. in the late 1930s. Hello Friends and Family. Just a little blog to update you on Rhymetime activities. Next week I will be at Miller Farm in Avon, Connecticut with Connecticut Boy Scouts at the Thanksgiving food tent. My friend, Cal Miller, owner of Miller Farm, has once again invited Rhymetime Publishing to gather "Toys 4 Tots". During the day, delicious food including: turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, various delicious veggies, dressing and pies are offered in the food tent. Food is available to be purchased for the holidays. Cal and her daughter and son and "elves" are in the tent assisting visitors. Rhymetime Publishing is at the farm with books that can be purchased, wrapped and placed in the "Toys 4 Tots" box. The local scouts are on hand to help and spread holiday cheer. Last year, over 100 books were purchased by donations and given to the Salvation Army Preschool.

Please come and visit the Miller Farm Food Tent. Festivities begin this Saturday, November 19, through Wednesday. Come and visit....sample the food and make a toy donation of $4.00. We need your help to make the holidays a magical time for children !

San Francisco Here I Come and Big E Update

Hello Friends,

I am off this week to San Francisco to visit family and friends. I can't wait to fly out and check in at The Hotel Mayflower on Bush Street. My favorite hotel ever with a deli next door. The hotel is about 3 blocks from my mother's condo on Pine Street. Taking Pine Street into China Town is about a 15 minute walk downhill. Uphill, I can head to the piers for an afternoon of boating and shopping.

While in San Francisco, I will be giving several workshops entitled: Mobius Magic. These workshops will be given to junior high schoolers during library time. We will discuss Dr. Mobius, his famous magical loop, construct loops and talk about Mobius strips of language.

The "Thinking Cap Literary Society" is sponsoring these workshops....my society ! Can't wait to tackle these scholars ! Books I will use include: The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson and The Mobius Strip by Clifford Pickover. Both books are excellent, easy to read discussions about scientific and mathematical concepts, and their relationships to writing skills. Mobius takes scholars to intellectual areas in our daily lives: the national recycling sign is a Mobius strip; the national breast cancer pink symbol. The ever challenging Mobius strip of one edge and one side...the ever interpretable Mobius language that challenges our brain. Here's several examples: "I get to keep what nobody needs" ; "A photograph is a secret of a secret...the more we learn the less we know". Endless interpreting.

The Big E was a huge success for CAPA authors. Over $30,000 in books were sold ! Personally, I sold a lot of books even when I wasn't signing them. Next year I will go back and take Bill Freund's new book that I am publishing about a magic cookie ! More soon on this adventure.

The Big E is coming to Springfield, Massachusetts next week. Many writers from CAPA will present their books in the Connecticut House during the exposition. Look for some of your favorite authors to be on hand to sign books and speak about their adventures in publication.

Rhymetime Publishing has completed "Duck Tape 2", and it is now available at the Big E and at Millrace Bookstore in Farmington, Connecticut. The book and companion coloring book which includes illustrations from "Duck Tape" is a wonderful holiday gift for children.

"Duck Tape 2" is about the curious duck from "Duck Tape" who finds himself in a dilemma: no more tape! The duck and his friends recycle the tape and store it away to use over and over. In the process, they clean up the lake and celebrate by joining a band! This book has been entered into the New England Book Festival...and will be sent again to Oprah! Amelia Earhart, lady with wings, lived a long time ago. She challenged the role of women in the field of employment and became an airplane pilot. Amelia Earhart studied airplane instrumentation and flight patterns. Earhart was one of the winners of the Powder Puff Derby and won other aviation competitions. Amelia Earhart welcomed challenges in her life and was famous and brave. In 1937, Earhart and her co-pilot,Fred Noonan, were flying to Howland Island and never reached their destination. This was The Last Flight and one that would have completed her around the world flight legacy. Amelia Earhart was a brave woman who left an incredible legacy for people everywhere.

Getting Serious about the Dog Days

Rabbit Rabbit! You'll have good luck all month if the first words you utter on the first of the month are "rabbit rabbit". You'll have more luck if it is your birth month. August typically is the beginning of the Dog Days of summer. Animal imagery this month is huge.

Dog Days are the hottest most sultry days of the summer. Usually beginning in July and extending into September. The Farmer's Almanac lists the Dog Days as 40 days beginning in July and ending in August, but the tradition is ancient, having beginnings in Roman times. In fact, the Dog Days were so named when Sirius, the "Dog Star" was raging. The ancient Romans believed the heat was caused by the angry dog, the brightest star in the heavens second to the sun. The feast of Saint Roch, patron saint of dogs is August 16. No matter how you celebrate the Dog Days, keep in mind that soon fall will be arriving. Dog Days signal the beginning of the end of summer. Celebrate the Dog Days...leave extra water for Fido, pack a picnic basket, read a good book (may I suggest Hooray for Heroes? ) vacation locally or faraway, take a bike ride or find a seashell. Listen carefully to the Dog Days sounds of summer--put a seashell to your ear!

Summertime 2010 "Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket by Jan Mann"

This has been an unbelievable summer in Connecticut. One of the warmest summers on record! The local gardeners have reported abundant crops and flowers. Makes me wish I still had my garden in the Farmington flats that I lovingly cultivated for 10 years...each summer praying for "the best summer yet". When I think of summer, I remember the flip-flops I wore as a kid and still wear as an adult. They were bought at Sears or Montgomery Wards in downtown Detroit for a quarter a pair. Some things just get better and better...those gummy rubber mats in a rainbow of colors now neatly decorated with bows and gems...take a look:

My Flip-Flops

O'Flip-flops, o'flip-flops I love you so
stuck to my feet and fast on the go!

You're rubber or plastic with no foot support
long or floppy or sometimes quite short!

You're cheesy and cheap and melt in the sun--
decorated with "diamonds" and are always great fun!

You're red or blue or yellow or brown--
I hear your flop sound all over my town !

I see your bright colors and sparkles and such--
toes crunched together into a great bunch!

Trying to keep those dang flip-flops on
hearing that old familiar flip-flop song.

Knowing that summer has finally come

My flip-flop detector has made me so smart
I'll just buy some others at the nearby Walmart!

Rhyme Time Books are now available on Amazon. A new book is in the works and should be out before September. Duck Tape 2, a book about recycling for children, is at the printers now and awaiting final "tweaking". This book follows Duck Tape, a book that won Honorable Mention at both the London Book Festival and the New England Book Festival for Independent Writers in 2008. A coloring book for both Duck Tape and Duck Tape 2 is in the works. More information as the printing begins.

Hooray for May! Last week Hooray for Heroes! was awarded Honorable Mention in Children's Literature at the San Francisco Book Festival. http://www.sanfranciscobookfestival.com. This is indeed an honor when considering the hundreds of books submitted for consideration. According to Mr. Bruce Haring, Director: "This was without a doubt, the most competitive festival ever." There will be a party in San Francisco this week to celebrate the authors who worked so hard to create their books...it will be at the famous Hotel Rex. Fortunately, my mother and brother live in the city and will represent illustrator Janice Hechter and me. Last year both Duck Tape and Santa's Hat won two awards for Children's Literature in the London Book Festival and the NYC Book Festival. Thanks to illustrators Janice Hechter, Toby Mikle and editor Nancy Lindstrom for their help and support in making these books a reality.

Toby Mikle, illustrator of many children's books, is preparing Duck Tape 2 for publication in June at King Printing in Lowell, Massachusetts. Partial proceeds from the sale of Duck Tape 2 will go to the Brain Injury Association of Connecticut, www.biact.homestead.com. This is a wonderful nonprofit organization that educates the public about brain injuries and provides resources for those with brain injuries. Visit the website and be impressed with the good work this association does in Connecticut. Check out the Hole in the Wall Gang website that explains the purpose of the Newman camps for ill children. The first camp was build in Ashford, Connecticut and now there are many such camps in the US and around the world.

April Showers finally arrived. The Farmington River is rising and moving very fast. I have been working at the Millrace Bookstore which is housed in the Gristmill Restaurant along the Farmington River. The river is moving rapidly along and is wide and beautiful. Farmington River is home to many Chinese ducks and a special visiting Harlequin duck. Many avid duck watchers visited the bookstore this past winter with binoculars and cameras to view the Harlequin duck. The large, white ducks are showing off so badly and are wandering around the parking lot. The Millrace Bookstore, owned by Jan Owens, is a beautiful location to visit. It is located at 40 Mill Lane, Farmington. Jan has current popular books, children's books (including Duck Tape!), and will order any book you desire. The Millrace Bookstore is home to the Farmington River Literary Arts Center, (FRLAC) a nonprofit organization dedicated to the literary arts and promoting reading and writing skills. Visit this bookstore when you next visit Farmington. The bookstore shares its location with the Gristmill Restaurant, which offers a varied menu including pub food. This mill is hundreds of years old and of special historic significance. Mill Lane is off Route 10, near Miss Porter's School. Your Village Store is also located on Mill Lane and was significant in the underground railroad era. To help visualize the beauty of the Farmington River, I present:

The Farmington River travels through my town

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Today I have decided to write about my brother, Max Wilson, who died last Valentine's Day. If this is a day to celebrate others, than I want to celebrate Max's life this Valentine's Day. He was a junior high teacher in California, and he was a popular teacher with teachers and especially his students. Max was clever and funny and had curiosity about people and how they lived. He tried to pass along this curiosity to his students...and felt successful doing so. He was the youngest of four kids, and was 7 years younger than me--the baby. He was a voracious reader and loved reading art books and mysteries. He also enjoyed reading my books to his students and sharing them with his friends. He is in my heart and is very much missed. Celebrate Valentine's Day with someone you love...it is a chance you don't want to pass up.

Oprah Winfrey has taken notice of duct tape in previous episodes of her show and loves duct tape! In December while visiting in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to visit with an old friend. Karen told me that she had seen an Oprah episode about duct tape. Karen knew I wrote a children's book titled: Duck Tape along with a coloring book. She urged me to write to Oprah and send along my book and coloring book. I did and I sealed the envelope with DUCT TAPE!!! This little book is illustrated by Toby Mikle and has won Honorable Mention at both The London Book Festival and The New England Book Festival in 2008. In my book, a shy and lonely duck finds love and adventure on his pond when he finds a roll of the gray, shiny tape. This is a love story and one that children and adults alike enjoy. I have sold the book and the coloring book to readers of all ages...when I read it at schools, I teach simple signs to the children and the fun begins! Now I challenge Oprah to read Duck Tape.

In 2010 she created her own publishing company and launched a fourth book: Hooray for Heroes! A book of 13 biographical poems of women and men who impacted history. Included are: Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Paul Newman, Marian Anderson and others! She grew up near Detroit, Michigan, graduated from Eastern Michigan University, and now lives near Hartford, Connecticut in Farmington. This is a beautiful town on the Farmington River and home of Miss Porter’s School, the University of Connecticut Medical School and home her cat, Gizmo !

Mollie Wilson worked in Washington, D.C. on the staff of the late Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson of Washington state, and later moved to Unionville, Connecticut to work for former Congressman Toby Moffett. While employed in the House and the Senate she researched and wrote on legislative issues impacting constituents. She attended the University of Maryland Paralegal Institute at the Library of Congress.

Wilson was a reporter and photographer for The Voice of the Valley, a Connecticut newspaper owned by The Bristol Press, before becoming an interpreter for deaf students. She is currently employed by Family Services Woodfield in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as an interpreter for deaf college students. She is a certified oral interpreter with The Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf in Washington, D.C. Her interpreting skills have taken her to many Connecticut community colleges, high schools and middle schools. She writes of those experiences in her poems in Rhyme Time, which is illustrated by Toby Mikle. In December, 2008, the author and illustrator won Honorable Mention in The London Book Festival and The New England Book Festival for Duck Tape. In 2009 Wilson and Mikle won Honorable Mention in The San Francisco Book Festival and The NYC Book Festival for Santa's Hat.

Wilson Ostroski is married to Robert J. Ostroski, a Farmington orthodontist. They have two grown daughters, Beth and Emily who still make their homes in Farmington. When not writing poetry, the author enjoys gardening in the community garden of Farmington, walking the Rails to Trails town paths, swimming and trying to play piano.
